Kurt

• Deprecation notification emails have been sent out to all CadHub users
  • July 15th deadline
  • Some drama with email limits as an new user with mailgun, but got there in the end
• A post of mine (Curated Code CAD) made it to the home page of Hackernews
  • Saw it as high as number 18
  • It drove some traffic
  • I realised that that article listed OpenSCAD and CadQuery as not having live editors, which is false, so added link to it 🙌
• Had a chat with Sebastian Alff @donalffons about a custom build of OpenCascade.js for STEP conversion
• Got a pull request up for Gzip plus higher download quality for CadQuery (not merged yet)
  • Some basic tests show 10x smaller files from Gzip 🎉
  • I suspect it might also mean more complex projects won't hit the 30s timeout if a big portion of the timeout was transferring data to s3

Working On: In the next week I'm going to work on db schema related to deprecating CascadeStudio and allowing saving of our new integrations

Jeremy

• Not a ton of stuff CadHub related this week.
• Posted on the GOSH forum, got a lot of reinforcing responses, not many surprises, but great discussion.
• KiCAD back in 2017 built a 3D model generator system with CADQuery and Jeremy's FreeCAD workbench, so they just reached out to the CADQuery team to help update the system to 2.x CADQuery.
  • Their CI system will generate all model variations
  • Next version of KiCAD will bundle CADQuery within, to generate models on the fly. Will save tons of data they currently install in the bundle.
• Suggests not getting too wrapped around the axle making a parameter UI that works perfectly for OpenSCAD and CADQuery. Focus on OpenSCAD, and we'll make it work for that.
  • Kurt agrees, because OpenSCAD has lead the space for customizer controls.
  • CADQuery-Jupyter has ability to create customizers, but no agreed upon methodology.

Frank

• Got some designing done:
  • IDE CAD Package Info View
  • Part Details View
    • Jeremy will send along example of CadQuery customization UI from FreeCAD workbench, but recommends we design for OpenSCAD initially.
  • Profile Page
    • Kurt is happy overall with this direction of the profile page, and will respond into the open comments.
• Took some notes of thoughts throughout the week:
  • Feature flags might be useful in the near future, like for GitHub integration or multifile support?
  • Had the fun thought of starting to refer to current dominant CAD tools as GUI-CAD or "gooeyCAD" 🤷‍♂️
  • User feedback system: would like very simple user feedback mechanic like Figma's or early Google Maps "shake" feedback (I heard from a client that Compass Realty had this when they launched and she loved it as a non-technical user).
  • Automated meta images with more info in the image card like GitHub's would be useful in future
    • Kurt also mentioned the wow-factor feature of having media embeds of 3d models on whatever platforms support it.
• Working On:
  • design system: colors, fonts, components organized
  • light mode: starting with IDE this week
  • Fusion 360 timeline blog post
    • Kurt is keen to get other authors on the blog for whoever is interested
