\chapter{Mathematical Concepts}\label{ch:qft}
Group theory is immensely important to the study of particle physics.
The definitions in this section are a blend of the definitions found in \citep{Georgi1999, Maggiore2005, Kreher2012, Weisstein}.
Groups of interest to us include the Poincar\'e group, the Abelian group $U(1)$, and the special unitary groups $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$. Indeed, the very notion of a particle can be defined using the Poincar\'e group, which is the group that incorporates translates and Lorentz transformations.
\section{Group Theory Basics}
\definition[Binary operation]{A \emph{binary operation} $\mu$ on a set $G$ is a function $\mu:G\times G\rightarrow G.$ That is, it associates every ordered pair $(p,q)\in G$ with another element $r\in G$.}
\definition[Group]{A \emph{group} $G$ is a set along with a binary operator $\ast$ that satisfies the following conditions:
\begin{itemize}
\item $\ast$ is \emph{associative}, that is, $(a\ast b)\ast c = a\ast (b\ast c)$ $\forall a,b,c\in G$

Quantum Field Theory can be thought of as a union of Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity. In the framework of special relativity, objects such as coordinates and momenta are identified with vectors in \emph{Minkowski spaces}\footnote{Special relaivity is an approximation to the \emph{general} theory of relativity, that describes the curvature and dynamic nature of spacetime. On small scales (such as the scales associated with particle physics), one can ignore the curvature of spacetime, much as we ignore the curvature of the Earth in our daily lives and proceed as if the ground we walk on is, indeed, flat.}, which are vector spaces that have the metric represented by the tensor

The elements of such vector spaces are known as 4-vectors, and are represented by symbols such as $x^\mu$, where $\mu = 0,1,2,3$. For example $$x^\mu = (t, x, y, z)$$ represents a \emph{position} 4-vector, where $t$ represents the time coordinate, and $x,y,z$ represent spatial coordinates. Similarly, the 4-vector
$$p^\mu = (E, p_x, p_y, p_z)$$ combines the energy $E$ with the momentum components $p_x,p_y,p_z$. The components of these 4-vectors can mix with each other through Lorentz transformations. Lorentz transformations are elements of the Lorentz group, defined below.

The Lorentz group is a subgroup of the \emph{Poincar\'e} group, defined below.

Particles can be defined as objects that transform under irreducible unitary representations of the Poincar\'e group. This paves the road for classifying particles based on which representation they transform under.
The Lorentz group is an example of a \emph{Lie group}.

\section{The Standard Model of Cosmology}\label{sec:sm_cosmology}
The \emph{standard model} of cosmology \citep{Bergstrom2004} is the isotropic and homogenous Friedman-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model. The conditions of isotropy and homogeneity fix the form of the FLRW metric in spherical coordinates:
