Trying to thread errbacks through to everywhere they could conceivably be used.

I've added just a couple of regression tests; I don't know how to test many of these particular lines of code, since I think many of them are probably unreachable, and I don't have time to track through this right now.  (Maybe @sorwaee or @ds26gte can help?)
