PG has a bunch of versions of Shakespeare's plays, the earlier of which are not really presentable. And other outliers.

For example, Much ado about nothing is:

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1519 (not bad at all)
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2240 (horrible)
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1520 (horrible)
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1118 (not the worst)
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2252 (horrible)
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1783 (horrible)

there are catalog notes saying that 1519 is an "improved" version.

quick search shows them all.
As part of a UI redesign, we could do things like

  • remove 5 of these 6 from search results (the obsoletes)
  • add redirects to 1519 along with override parameters.
  • reformat the generated html for the obsoletes
  • stop making ebook files for the the obsoletes
one step we could take in this path is to create a type : obsolete
