When (and when not) to use Database Adapters?

Hey! Been checking out next-auth and it seems really neat. When would you use a custom strategy to integrate a database vs. creating a new adapter?

I ask because it'd be interesting to see a next-auth + Hasura example, and I wasn't sure if I'd need to go the full provider route.
