A simple solution would be to add a dictionary mapping release-X.Y to the start date (ideally specified to the hour). Then we only need to add one line when we create a branch.

This seems the most practical solution for now... see also #4667 (comment)

Note to self: use git merge-base PREVTAG CURRENT_BRANCH
