The wiring diagram for connecting an FT232 board is incorrect - the RX and TX pins are swapped around. TX is pin 4, and RX is pin 5:
Connecting them the way the Installation diagram says will result in a ping timeout when attempting to flash the firmware. Inverting them will result in a successful flash.
