I'd say this works too. For me it certainly did. Can be closed imo.

My guess is that it only works when the username in github matches the one in bitbucket. Bitbucket has a facility for specifying an alias for a user, but using this does not appear to have the desired effect.

A reasonably simple workaround is to update the usernames in the un-zipped json file and then re-zip it before uploading to github. I have just now confirmed that this works.
