It would be great if the bib items in autocomplete list could be (optionally) filtered by article title.

It is implemented that way. The suggestion is filtered against label authors title journal.
There seems to be an upstream issue in VSCode, which only considers 54 characters for the
filter text. So if you want to match something appearing later, you will never get it.

I have just posted an issue on VSCode vscode#74133.
