add knn estimators and fix mi implementation

Implemented k-nearest neighbor estimators (as seen in gregversteeg/NPEET). Unlike the naive estimators, knn yields consistent results with appropriate choice of k and is much faster than kde.

Also added code to enable knn to be the default choice.
